When and How to Mulch Your Flower Beds

September 24, 2026 Perfect Landscaping & Lawn Services

Mulch keeps soil moist, slows weeds, and gives flower beds and tree rings a clean, finished look. Done right, it's one of the cheapest ways to improve how a yard looks and how the plants in it do.

Most people mulch in spring, once the beds are cleaned up and before the weeds get started. A fresh layer in fall is also a good idea, since it helps protect roots through the winter.

Prepare the bed first. Pull the weeds, clear old debris, and edge the bed so there's a clean line between the lawn and the mulch. Spreading new mulch over weeds just lets them grow through.

Spread mulch about two to three inches deep. More than that can hold too much moisture and starve roots of air; less won't block weeds well.

Keep mulch off tree trunks and away from the siding of the house. A thick pile piled against a trunk — the so-called mulch volcano — can rot the bark, and mulch against siding can invite pests.

We spread mulch for homes and commercial properties across Knoxville and the surrounding area. Call Perfect Landscaping & Lawn Services at (865) 338-8511 for a free estimate.
